Appleby Holiday Accommodation

There's every choice of holiday accommodation both in Appleby itself and in and around the neighbouring picturesque villages and hamlets of the Eden Valley. This old Cumbrian market town, steeped in a colourful history of border raids and upheaval is now famous for it's annual gathering of the Appleby Horse Fair. It's a convenient stepping off point from which to either walk or cycle the surrounding beauty of the Lake District and Cumbria fells, or the moors of the Yorkshire Dales and Pennine Range. A good mix of shops and stores supported by a post office, Banks, eating places, pubs and a Tourist Information Centre lining the unusually wide inclined main street stretching  between St Lawrences Church and  The High Cross monument on the higher ground, provide self sufficiency for residents and visitors alike. Appleby Castle, the historic home of Lady Anne Clifford, stands undisturbed on the edge of the old market town of Appleby in the very heart of Cumbria's tranquil unspoiled Eden Valley.

This ancient building whose rich and varied history can be traced back to Roman times has on occasions been held by both the Kings of Scotland and Kings of England. Today, following extensive restoration work, the owner, Sally Nightingale, has opened it's doors to paying guests who have a wish to experience something of the character of days gone by.

If it's only a short break, a complete get-away, a wedding, corporate, social or sporting event, there is a choice of seven rooms equipped with 17th C  four poster beds, antique wardrobes and furnishings, medieval style wall hangings together with a complete range of modern day guest facilities.

In addition, there are three self catering two bedroomed cottages and a studio apartment for two people within the castle grounds for extra privacy.

Check in time is 3pm and afterwards guests are invited for a welcome drink and afternoon tea followed at 4pm with a complimentary informative guided tour of the inside of the castle.

Appleby Castle is situated in “Cumbria's Last Wilderness” between the fells and waters of the English Lake District to the west, and the Dales and moors of the North Pennines to the east. The timeless quality of Cumbria's Eden Valley combined with a taste of “Gracious Living” will provide you with a truly memorable experience.

The Castle has it's own stretch of river for fishing and can accommodate fishing, golfing and shooting parties.
