Viver Watermill (Hincaster)
Viver Mill was once a working corn mill, driven by water power, dating back to the 13th century and mentioned in the Domesday Book. The mill was working until 1950-when no fewer than 25 farmers used to bring corn to the mill. There were 3 sets of stones for grinding-two for making oatmeal and one for cattle food.
The mill is surrounded by countryside & farmland and has panoramic views down the valley towards Farleton Knott.
The grounds are 1.5 acres of mature garden, split into individual rooms and include a mature orchard. The focal points are the mill pond, the original mill race and the operational water wheel.
Guests are encouraged to enjoy and relax in the garden, sit beside the mill pond, take a cream tea in the summer house over the mill stream, or sit on the elevated balcony overlooking the garden and take in the views of the countryside.
Once inside the mill, you will appreciate the true character of the building. Walk into the main lounge and you will see the mill's roof which features a rare triple crook roof construction, which proves the roof was thatched in medieval times.
Guests can take in all the history, sitting with a pot of tea, in front of the big roaring wood burning stove or enjoy a book from our library on the mezzanine gallery.
With only a small number of guests, Dianne is able to give her visitors plenty of time and personal attention. Breakfast is served in the dining room or, weather permitting outside on the patio beside the mill pond. Local produce is used with home made preserves.
Guests have a large lounge to relax in, this has triple aspect windows and French doors onto a large balcony with chairs and table. This room is situated on the 1st floor to take in the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the garden. There is also a flat screen T.V.
In the winter sit in front of the large wood burning stove with a book from the mezzanine gallery. This is also another sitting area for guests.
The mill with all its history and character is for you to appreciate and enjoy.
